a quick method we use to do as kids was to say we deposited money and either the payphone ate it or we were disconnected in mid-call. if you do this now days they will ask to send you a check or to take the amount off of your bill. to get a free call one has to say that your quarter is jammed in the coin slot and that it wont go in and it wont come out.

depending on the operator you may or may not get connected.

Usually the phone fraud we hear about is calling card fraud. Calling cards are fairly safe to use if you aren’t stupid. never make calling card calls from your house. Another rule you should follow is to never talk to a calling card operator.

remember that they will have a list of all the calls made as well as how long they were. chances are they will just write off the losses and will never call anyone on the list. however that person’s phone number will go onto a security list and when you call the next time using another calling card number from the same company they will be able to detect you faster and shut you down.

Calling cards can be good for anywhere from a few days to a month depending on how you got it and how much you are using it. Using credit cards as calling cards will get them blocked through that LDC if you make too many calls but you can always switch LDC’s.

the easiest way to get calling card numbers is to go to a bank of payphones at an airport or train station and watch people as they dial their number. this is called shoulder surfing. a friend of mine used to collect peoples p.i.n. numbers for peoples bank accounts this way though he never intended on using them. if a portable video camera is available take it with you and video tape the people punching in their numbers. some people enter their number very fast and the camera will allow you to go back and watch over and over again until you get it. just remember to be discreet.

some services require you to speak your calling card number to them making it easier to just stand there and listen.

calling card numbers can be obtained while biege boxing by calling the business office while they are open and telling them that you need your pin number. they will ask to call you back to verify that you are indeed at that number. they will also ask for some personal information to verify that it is indeed ‘you’.

speaking of calling the phone company, try calling an LDC and asking to switch your long distance service to their company. tell them that you would like a few calling cards and that you would like to pick your own pin number. after a day or two the number becomes activated and you can use it easily for at least a month.

another method of gathering calling card numbers is to attach a tap on the line of a calling card only payphone. tape all transactions then play the tape to a dtmf decoder.

though the following is a pretty extreme method it does work. simply steal people wallets and purses and take the calling card. writing down the number and returning it would be the best option as you would have a month in which to use it. breaking into cars is a fairly easy task if you know there is going to be a wallet or purse in there. going to houses on dark summer nights it is possible to cut a window screen open and reach in to grab whatever is closest.

calling card numbers can also be bought or traded for using other information. the problem is finding someone with whom you can trade anonymously and who has number they are willing to sell.
